Approximately four uears ago in a freak accident, as much as I wish a war story to tell, I fell and broke my ankle in three different places. When I fell I knew immediately that it was not a question if I had broken my ankle it was more a question of just how bad it was broken. The instant I started to fall I recall hearing a horrific "popping" sound in my head, a sound unlike anything I have ever heard before and hope to never hear again. After hitting the ground I immediately sat up to inspect where the sound had originated from. I'll never forget the feeling of dread that overcame me as I looked towards my feet discovering that instead of seeing the top of my left foot I was looking at the bottom of it. Upon arriving at the emergency department at Frye Regional I was stricken with pain and fear as many unknowns rushed through my head . After several attempts to reset the bones in my ankel without the need of a surgeon, the ED attendings decided to call in for a second opinion from an orthopedic specialist. Luckily, Dr.Campbell, while on the golf course, received the call and rushed to the hospital to consult with the ED physcians. After which point it was decided that I would need surgery to repair the broken bones and shattered joint. As the anesthesiologist and surgical staff prepped me to go under the knife, I will never forget my first impressions of Dr. Campbell as he approached my bedside, still wearing his golf slacks. After introducing himself he began to explain the extent of the damage done and what steps he was going to take to repair them. Despite the fact that I was overcome with anxiety and pain, Dr. Campbell's bedside Manor was impeccable, never once using vocabulary or terms that a lay person may have difficulty understanding. By the time he was finished sharing his house of action with me, I knew without a doubt in my mind that I was going to be just fine. I counted backwards from 10 and then just a few short hours later I rembering waking to Dr. Campbell's big bright smile as he informed me of the procedures success. Needless to say the recovery was long and painful but Dr.Campbell was there day and night for any questions or concerns I may have had. I feel like I should also mention why exactly my recovery in particular was so painful, as it does to the good Doctors charcter. Before the surgery, while the anesthesiologist was screening me for allergies and medical history, I informed them both of my history of opiate abbuse resulting from a previous accident. Dr. Campbell in all of his wisdom remembered that conversation and took my concerns of becoming addicted again after battling and overcoming the nightmare of opioid dependency into his decision not prescribe me any narcotics post surgery, even after numerous phone calls and office visits in which I was practiclly begging for pain medicine. He didn't just pawn me off to a nurse or office staff offering no reason as to why he would not prescribe pain meds, he himself got on the phone explaining how he could not ethicly prescribe me narcotics knowing my history and wishes. After which he would remind me of what it could lead to if he did and then offering me words of encouragement motivating me to continue recovery narcotic free. Well here I sit almost five years later with nothing but a scar as a physical reminder of this whole experience. Dr. Campbell did so much more than repair my broken ankle that day, he showed me that I could overcome even the worst pain without the need of narcotics to do so. Which in turn showed me that I was capable of so much more than I ever imagined possible. Dr. Campbell is a whole health Doctor with his patients best interest at mind and heart.
