I’ve been training at Beacon MMA for the past year and it has been the cornerstone to a healthier lifestyle for me. I’ve always been very active, playing different sports growing up, but nothing compares to the workout I get doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu there. It was a little intimidating walking into a mixed martial arts gym having zero experience, but Coach Kirby made a great first impression and continues to foster the kind of environment where I never feel unsafe or overwhelmed.
I live in Raleigh and likely pass several other gyms to train at Beacon MMA in Chapel Hill. I highly recommend giving them a call or filling out the form on their website to get a free class. You won’t regret it!
Coach Kirby was very welcoming to my son and did a great job of getting him oriented. The gym was very clean and seems well-managed. My son is excited about his Muay Thai and Jiu-jitsu classes; they are a great addition to his extracurricular activities. We're confident that Beacon MMA is the place for him.
Coach Kirby and Beacon MMA is top notch. I was amazing at his patience and his innate ability to teach. My son has been in several sports and this is the most excited he’s ever been. Please check them out you won’t be disappointed!
There are a lot of options for jiu jitsu training, particularly in the triangle. I have trained at a few different schools over the past couple years as a permanent student, or visiting while traveling.
Coach Kirby Farrales is a detail-oriented instructor. His school uses the G13 system, which means that rather than teaching whatever random technique he feels like teaching during a given class, he follows a system of repetitive reinforcement. This is particularly helpful for new students to jiu jitsu.
Unlike at some schools where new students are getting lost trying to follow advanced, multi-step techniques in their first week that they may not see again for weeks or months later (see prior statement), new students spend time to perfect a smaller number of moves, and then build on those over time.
Another thing that separates Coach Kirby’s school and the G13 curriculum is the emphasis on the stand-up aspects of jiu jitsu often ignored at other academies. Each sparring session starts on the feet, which better prepares students for tournament, or ultimately, for self defense, where all encounters start standing.
When you are looking to start jiu jitsu for the first time, take note of the beginner’s curriculum, how students take in techniques at a given class, and whether the school works on takedowns.
If you have trained elsewhere, you will find that Coach Kirby’s attention to detail and the school’s emphasis on standing will improve your practice.
For anyone, the mats are quality and clean.
Coach Kirby is one of the best instructors I have ever worked with in over 30 years of practicing martial arts. A consummate professional, Coach Kirby provides clear and precise instruction while creating a hard-working and family friendly environment. Our community is very lucky to have him open a gym in our area.
