An amazing trail that is off the path and without any traffic noise.
It uses the cleared old railway line that ran through the area, so its an easy walk without any real troubles.
Sometimes the main walking path in is impassable because of heavy rains or when dams further down the river leading to lake Jordan are opened. This doesn't mean you cannot walk the trail is just means you have to find another way on to it. There are areas around with homes you can park at and take to the trail. All the hassle is well worth it. Its a beautiful trail that is pretty clean, well shaded, and easy to walk with a ending view that makes the 5 miles (round trip) trail 110%% worth it. Not to mention its reportedly the largest summertime roost of bald eagles in the Eastern United States. If you have the time give this trail a try, you won't regret it.
This is one of my favorite trails to hike. Bring a good pair of walking/hiking shoes. If there has been a lot of rain the entrance to the trail may be flooded and impassible.
4.65 mile there and back route
PATH: Forested path the whole way with mild root growth across path. Almost all packed dirt except for three brief areas with sand (
Great place for a short or long walk. Well maintained trails. Nice views of the lake. The trails can get a bit muddy after a heavy rain.
I hiked this trail one day in September 2019 after work. Out and back is a bit over 5 miles. There are wildlife photo opportunities on the way out and back but when you get to the lake there will be opportunities to see of photograph the lake from a little peninsula where the trail ends at the lake. When I was there there was an abundance of Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets and other shore birds fishing in the shallow water. The trail is undergoing some drainage maintenance now so I had to walk around some areas and there is an obstacle at the beginning of the trail. I had to cross about 25 yards of knee deep swampy backwater which was about 100 yards from the trailhead. Waders would be a good idea. Wish I’d brought some. Unless you do this hike in winter, bring insect repellent and watch where you put your feet.

Unusual in the area, the trail runs through wetlands which allows visitors to see birds and animals and hear sounds not typical to most trails in the area. The drawback to being in a wetland is that it can be underwater after big rains and buggy in hot weather. Make sure you make it all the way to the end as...
This is a moderate out and back trail in Mason Neck State Park.

The Eagle Spur Trail now follows the old route to the lake. Railroad use began to dwindle in the 1970s as trucking became the primary mode of transporting goods and Norfolk Southern abandoned the railroad in 1979. In 1987, the Durham City Council passed a resolution stating that abandoned...
