I studied 6 string guitar as a student of Kyle Smith for quite some time. Then I was away for a while and returned to his lessons. I became a fan of jazz guitar and came to hear him play the sole guitar spot with the Shedd Institute house band, the Emerald City Jazz Kings.
Let me put it this way: if you want a teacher who will quickly discern exactly where you are in skill, experience and discipline with your music, this is your teacher. From that initial assessment point the student's own input strongly influences the direction of the learning experience. He will take you where your see yourself going as a musician - and challenge you to ends you thought you could not keep up with as a student. I have grown more than I ever anticipated that I could when I worked consistently to learn the mix of theory, scales, chords, improvisation and ear training. My first jazz composition which I studied was Duke Ellington's Satin Doll. I don't have room to tell you all that I learned in those melodies and rhythms. My pick easily for the best guitar teacher I've ever had is Kyle Smith and I've been around a while in Eugene and Chicago and had many great teachers
Kyle is a very patient and gifted teacher. He's been teaching me for a couple years now and I've never had a "bad" lesson. Also my demanding schedule makes it very difficult for me to make my lesson sometimes but he is understanding and has been amazing at working with me so I can make up missed lessons. I wouldn't think about going to anyone else.
Though I have been playing guitar for many years, and with a number of bands, I am learning much more about the instrument and how to improved both my understanding and playing through lessons with Kyle Smith. He is encouraging, patient and knows his craft. I've enjoyed and benefited from each lesson.
My 11 year old Grandson has been a student of Kyle for a couple years. The boy has ADHD, so it requires extra patience and creativity on Kyle's part to succeed with a student like this. We are so glad to have found a skilled and talented teacher of Kyle's caliber, who not only has those qualities, but as truly befriended my Grandson! Chris takes great pride and satisfaction in the accomplishments Kyle has inspired. Many thanks, to a great teacher!
Kyle is an amazing teacher. He has helped my son who deals with ADHD and Autism tremendously. He tailors the lessons to his needs and desires for playing the guitar, and is not strict like other teachers I have had in the past. I have also taken lessons from him, and I have to say that he has made learning the guitar and ukulele very relaxing and fun for me. It is something I look forward to. I highly recommend Kyle Smith for your lessons. He is great!
