A good experience to get an idea how the Amish live. Loved it a lot and enjoyed the introduction done by the lady there who explained how they live and how a family perform their daily duties. The kitchen is great everything there works without electricity. The foot tour to the village was good too. There was a bus tour for 25$ but did not take it. There were so many home made products worth trying and buying. I bought some hot pepper jam????????. You will like it.
This is a great place to really learn about the Amish and Menonite cultures if you have not done so before.
Here, you'll find three different types if tours. Some that include bus tours to take you off the Amish Village property itself, giving you the opportunity to divulge into a more real sense of Amish life, and life in the surrounding Lancaster county.
The easiest and least expensive of the tours ($10 for adults), includes a guided tour of an Amish home, which also allows for the chance to learn a bit more what life is like.
The grounds host a covered bridge, school house, blacksmith work shop, barn (with live animals), and several "shoppes." The shops offer icecream, sweet treats and a variety of typical and local goods.
A small playground is situated next to the school house, and is available for all to use. In fact, I couldn't pry my daughter away from it.
If traveling to Lancaster County with children, I especially recommend The Amish Village. I found it to be under whelming with much to offer. Picnic tables and benches are situated outside of the shops, offering a chance for respite.
The geographical location is great, as it is just about a mile off of Rt. 30 (Lincoln Highway), so it isn't out of the way.
Expect to spend at least one hour with the $10 tour, and several hours with other tour options. During peak times, I would also recommend booking in advance.
Been here twice. Didn't know the "English" live here too. The bus tour offered more insight than the verbal introduction alone. Though we still didn't see a lot of people out there on Monday.
Very inspirational experience.. All should should live so simple. We'd be just that much closer to The God of Heaven...
Even in the off season and even with snow on the ground, the area around Strasburg is picturesque. We have an Amish community near where we live but wanted to see if there were differences in really the most famous Amish area of the country; Lancaster County. And there is! Our area, they ride bikes, this area, they do scooters. So when you do the bus tour, get all the details from a truly great tour guide, Margaret. Her knowledge of the area is terrific and she is able to really give you firsthand knowledge of the people and customs and history. Excellent bus tour!
