This is across the street from the ball park. The pictures should be updated. Small trees have been planted. Perennials are blooming around the perimeter. There are raised bed for planting. Thank you Enid F. Jones
A shelter in the middle of a storm. I have watched the Tioga Community group stay faithful as they worked hard to create this wonderful space in the middle of a very dense area. It used to house an abandoned house and the area was shrew with trash of all kinds. We would have to park in front of this area when going to my cousins house on thanksgiving. It was scary and dark.
The Tioga community group donated their time and oftentimes their own money. I am not aware of any one in this group receiving any funds for working on this project. I am not a business, but am part of a family who resides in this area. I have and continue to lend my support to them. I grew up in North Philadelphia, in an area where there were no trees, no place to run on grass and feel the breeze. I have participated with them when they handed out flowers to their neighbors or anyone else who drove through. Their volunteers are a small group of multi-cultural, multi-ethic people, all wanting the same thing -- a space to rest and breathe, a respite of sorts.
I hosted a public reading "Strength to Love" by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The neighbors came out as we each read words which were encouraging for our souls. I am not a business. I am a resident of Philadelphia. I don't know if I qualify and fit into the guidelines of who you want to hear from.
Last week my granddaughter and I went down to visit the park. I wrote a poem to express my gratitude for this spaced. I looked on line to see if there was anything about Hope Park and Community Garden and found this link. I had written a poem about my recent experience there which I will share with you now.
HOPE PARK AND GARDEN - 20th and Tioga Streets, Philadelphia, PA Thursday 5/20/20 - 4-5 p.m.
One sat and read "Becoming" as she continues to "become".
Another walked around the edges giving thanks for sacred ground.
While another prepared to go to work and nurse the sick with skill and love.
When they moved out from their positions
having filled themselves with peace
The space was greeted by mother/daughters
bringing laughter, joy and love
As we watched mother sit and daughters run
their smiling faces free
The sun shone bright
The breeze blew softly
our hearts were now ready
we came to Hope
we were prepared.
My experience in this garden
