It's been 31/2 wks since I got my 'new toe!' I've been seeing Dr Colannino since 7/13 because of hallux rigidus of my left big toe - frozen & painful. Took me 6 yrs to decide it was time to act but the possibility of having range of motion in that joint via an 'arthro surface implant' sold me. The other option was fusion, my 2nd choice, as at 62 I still feel young enough to benefit from toe bending activities. I liked Dr C. right off the bat, straight forward & down to earth. Two of my RN coworkers recommended him too. I had my surgery at Roger Williams in Providence, RI. Outpatient. Just couldn't be happier with the way everything went! I worried some about post-op pain but there really wasn't any. I was equipped with Celebrex (wonderful - take it AM & PM) and Percocet (took it x2, gave me a headache & I realized I didn't need it!). The secret is the NERVE BLOCK! Goodness, it's the best! It doesn't wear off for 24 hours and with the implant I went home, my foot bandaged, in a 'boot', able to walk on it right away (no crutches). Honestly, I never had any real pain (I know, hard to believe), just some discomfort here & there after the block wore off. I was good about ice & elevation. The incision is emaculate -' SubQ' stitches and I can bend my joint already! Seeing the X-ray today - WOW, gorgeous and I'm walking in reg shoes and starting PT. I am completely satisfied & can totally,100%, recommend Dr Colannino.!
