Waxhaw Cemetery

Waxhaw Presbyterian Church is a beautifully maintained small church with a adjoining graveyard located off a country road is a most peaceful place to visit. Notably a special memorial installed by the D.A.R., Waxhaw Chapter honor's Andrew Jackson's Mother, Elizabeth Hutchinson. Elizabeth, a heroine is the unsung equal or other great female American patriots of the era. Elizabeth lost two sons to the British and finally gave her life succumbing to Typhoid while nursing captured Patriot's virtually abandoned to die of disease on British prison ships in Charleston Harbor. Also interred here are many of Col. Abraham Buford's doomed Virginia Continental soldiers. These interred here survived the slaughter of the battlefield only to die of their bayonet and other wounds a few days after arriving for medical care. These Virginians had weeks previously traveled to South Carolina in the vain attempt to save "Charlestown" from defeat. Their pleas for Quarter while surrendering to Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton’s troops and Cavalry were ignored. Instead of Quarter all were stabbed or bayoneted.
