Po Melvin's

Please go visit this restaurant if you haven’t already. I started going to Po Melvin’s way back in 1997 and it’s still just as good as it was back then. The owner Mel is so kind and he really cares for his costumers! The catfish and red beans and rice is my FAVORITE! Don’t sleep on the black-eyed peas too bc they are so delicious!!!

Mel (the owner) came over to our table to check on us and he ended up giving me and my cousin a large container of the black-eyed peas to take home and have on New Year’s Day!!! We visited the restaurant last Tuesday evening.

One of few places that still serves American comfort food, and still makes it taste great. Very busy with nearly a full dining room and dozens of take out orders. Short staffed (as every place is now) but they pull together to make it all work. Seated in 5 minutes, ordered in 2 more, hot food 13-15 later. Came here specifically for black eyed peas and pot roast. Both were good and tasty. Slight spice on the peas metwirh mixed reviews (1 loved, 1 not so much) salad, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls all good. Server was very busy with many tables and still checked in every few minutes anyway. Prices were actually very good considering quantity and quality, inflation will probably affect that soon. This will go into a 2-3 week rotation now simply because of driving distance. If you are close by weekly / biweekly would be well deserved treat.

Don't miss an opportunity to experience Cajun hospitality and cuisine at this retro diner. They know what they're doing and they do it right! Shrimp, catfish, and home-style dinners in huge portions that will make you glad you have some leftovers for a snack. Mel Jr. & staff warmly welcome their guests and treat you like family! Definitely worth driving a few extra miles to find this gem. Tell them Texarkana Texas sent you and enjoy!

We ordered our Thanksgiving meal for 4-6 people this year. My Daddy was in the hospital and then a rehab facility. We had a lot of things going on. Daddy was able to come home the Wednesday. The day before the big day. I went and picked up our meal. The staff was awesome! The next day I heated everything up. We LOVED IT ALL. I made yeast rolls and mac & cheese but we were so happy and really enjoyed the meal. Portions were more than enough. My personal favorite was Pralines and yams! Just so good. So, I whole heartedly say I had a fantastic experience!
