This is a great Catholic community. Our family enjoyed the Divine Liturgy. Glad we made the trip out to visit.
A wondrous spiritual experience in the surround of wondrous parishioners.
This is my parish. Baptized Roman Catholic while in Chicago I found Immaculate Conception, Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic in Palatine. It was a Godsend to me and my family. Moving to West Frisco in 2018, I was excited there was a Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Parish so close in The Colony. I had already met the pastor, because he had preached a retreat at our Palatine parish. The parish has wonderful welcoming people - primarily Ukrainian, but also non-Ukrainian folk like myself that love the Divine Liturgy, reverence and spirituality of the eastern rite. I'll probably do a rite conversion soon, but that is not a requirement. There is tradition of having coffee and treats after the 10 AM liturgy on Sundays, and this is often a light brunch and gives chance for informal fellowship after worship. There is also a catechisis during the school year (religion school) for pre-school through adult. Highly recommend you give this church a try. It may become your new faith home. We also have a second wonderful priest, who is retired due to health reasons, but still is regularly in attendance, and a powerful preaching Deacon. We are blessed to be such a small parish but have three clergy. There is a new Bible study that just started, that I very much enjoyed yesterday evening.
I wish there were more Parishes like this in DFW. It was truly a blessing to visit and experience the divine liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. As a recent Catholic convert to the Western rite, I try to experience as much of the diversity in the Church as possible as I travel for a living. Fortunately this trip was only an hour from the house.
This Church is small but it is truly beautiful. The people were very welcoming and the meal afterwards was a welcome treat.
The homily by the Deacon was so good my 13 year old daughter even said as much (seriously, that was the first time I've ever heard that). Much of the liturgy is actually said in Ukrainian, but you catch on easy enough. There are more "Lord, have mercy" moments than I could even count (in Ukrainian it's Hospody pomyluy). Communion by intinction (though they don't use that term - that's us Westerners who came up with that 😜) was a great experience as well.
I'd encourage as many Catholics in DFW as possible to make a small pilgrimage there at some point... And stay after for the post liturgy meal!
If you live anywhere near the Colleyville, Plano, Frisco area and are looking for a home Parish, I'd highly recommend it. Even if you don't speak Ukrainian or have never been to any Eastern Rite Church, I promise you will be blessed.
I am not a one time visitor, but I am a member who has been attending with my family for the last few years. I am a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism, and I had a difficult time with the modern Roman Rite. The mystery and the beauty just seemed lacking in comparison. At Saint Sophia's I once again found that beautiful liturgy, albeit in the Byzantine form. We have a nice mix of Ukrainian and English at Mass; just enough for it all to be understandable but it keeps your mind busy. The people are wonderful and friendly. We typically have about 100 souls on Sunday and of this number I estimate about 40% are children. Saint Sophia's is definitely worth a few visits.
