Really neat experience to tour a submarine and a warship. It really brings history to life. It is a completely and-guided tour, so I would have loved to have more information, stories and tidbits, posted about the various rooms and machinery. What they had was very sparse, and I didn't see any docents to talk with. I understand it is largely if not entirely run by volunteers, so I can't be too critical, but it would be nice to be able to learn the story in more depth.
Other things to be aware of if you go:
* Even though it is at Seawolf Park, the submarine on display is not the Seawolf, which, as far as I understand, was not recovered after being sunk by friendly fire. It is the USS Cavalla.
* They charge $10/adult and $5/child unless you have a group of 15 or more, in which case it is $3/person. They also have discounts for seniors and veterans.
* The gift shop is run by volunteers so there is no guarantee it will be open.
* The ships have fans throughout to circulate the air, but are otherwise not air conditioned. They can get pretty hot and stuffy in the heat of the day.
* The doors throughout the submarine are pretty small, perhaps 4.5 ' from top to bottom and may pose a challenge for the elderly or anyone who is not flexible.
* The ladder to the submarine's turret used to be accessible but is now closed. I am guessing this is due to a safety concern.
This may be off the beaten path for tourist attraction in Galveston but it is worth the visit! We enjoyed touring both ships on site and learning about the role of submarines in WW2.
Walking through the ships really gives you an idea of what it would have been like to serve on a sub. Highly recommend it!
Something cool to see on a Sunday afternoon. They have a submarine that you could actually walk through ( super cramp ) and feel how these seaman lived. There is also a battle ship to explore and kind of get the feel for what these sailors had to endure to protect our freedom. I definitely commend them for their sacrifice.
A real fun way to visit the past of the US Navy. A real submarine and a real Destroyer are on site. You can go in and walk around at your leisure and learn about these vessels. A good value for the money. We spent about 75-80 minutes here. I could have gone longer, but my family was done. Very interesting!
Interesting. I would have liked a guide. I was fortunate enough to find an old salt to explain how things worked. I had children from 3 to 18, and they all enjoyed it. Not as great for tall people. It would be a good afternoon after seeing the Battleship Texas (not too far away).
