A Community Restoration Cemetery Project for an old forgotten African American Cemetery. More than a Century old! Probability of former slaves and indentured servants were buried here in outskirts of downtown Conroe, TX! It resides in the Independent and College Addition of Old Historic Conroe, an area called Madeley Quarters! Adjacent to Oakwood Cemetery at 105 E. Davis street and 10th Street, Conroe, TX.
We checked out Conroe Community Cemetery on Highway 105 and N. 10th Street. It was said that the historic cemetery may be one of the oldest burial grounds. It had graves dating back to the 1890's. The ground was very soft, difficult to walk on.

After further research on Luther James Dorsey who is buried in the Conroe Community Cemetery I discovered that he was what was called a "Buffalo Soldier" during his service in the 10th Cavalry from 1873 to 1878. The Buffalo Soldiers were an all black regiment commissioned by Congress in 1866 to help keep peace in the Indian territories.
