After being in Magnolia ISD for 2 years and watching my son go from being on the A/B honor roll to getting F’s in MaTh, Science & ReAding on his progress report I decided to take action and pull him out mid year. Now, let me be the first to say that my son is no angel! He’s a boy! He doesn’t sit still at all times, he blurts out answers, he makes noises during class time… however he’s no DUMMY! I probably would have left him at Ellisor if my little brown son hadn’t been asked to do an assignment called “Plantation” where the children had to draw a pic of a Plantation, with the main house, SLAVE quarters and a crop that was harvested during those times! I understandably was upset and brought this to the attention of the Principal, AP, superintendent & a few of the board members. Needless, to say no one batted an eye, because in Magnolia ISD we only make up 5% of the student body so I guess they’re use to the KKK mentality! Fast forward a week later, I get a call now all of a sudden my son is bullying another student! I knew that they were going to come for him but I didn’t think it would be so soon! So before they failed him and tarnished his record I withdrew him.

I found Woodlands Classical Academy online and went in for the tour. I was pleased at first glance at the diversity of the students and staff! I was worried that my son would be behind as Ellisor has a “no homework” and no structure lesson plan. Now we have homework EVERY night, Shakespeare sonnets to memorize, set test days, and EVERYTHING is listed on a portal that’s updated daily!! There are no surprises and the teachers really care about the students learning! We went from F’s on progress reports to A’s and B’s on report cards! Civil rights tests, Gettysburg Address & Oregon Trail projects and grades all aced! Yes A’s!! We passed to STAAR test as well, coming from failing the reading and writing parts last year!

My advise to MISD is... children are NOT all the same! Diversity training is definitely in order! My son is NOT dumb, slow or unreachable YOU just don’t know how to do your job! And train your teachers to have a bit of decorum! For Laura Sanders to tell students that she’s glad that Bryce is gone shows very little couth and her full character and somehow she made it to coach Literary Coach when she failed in keeping her classroom in order! According to several parents she even told the children that she hated them at one point! MISD parents I wish you the best.

Our daughter who is in the fourth grade has been with this school since KG.Our experience has been very positive. Most of the teachers we came across were good and accommodative to our needs. We have seen some teacher turnover over the years, but the quality of education hasn't suffered. The front office staff are professional and helpful. The director Mrs. Perzigian was the middle school teacher who took over as director two years back. All our interactions with her have been very positive. One thing missing is the lack of large space for kids to do PE. The school also lacks extracurricular activities like orchestra, music and arts. But the academic education is rigorous. The best thing about the school is the coziness of the Celebration church facility hosting KG-G5 (This is a public charter school not affiliated with the church). K6-8G are in a separate building in the same campus. The school has KG-8G, each grade has two sections, totaling around 360 kids. Powell elementary next door has 800 kids. We recommend the Woodlands Classical Academy to anyone who wants a smaller school seeking academic rigor.

Look, you need to understand that these Classical Academies are NOT going to be like public schools where children are allowed to run rampant over the teachers and disturb other students who are trying to learn. My two grandchildren attend Willis Classical Academy and they love it. Yes, there's strict discipline (like volume level at lunch) and missing recess for improper behavior. But isn't discipline the very thing we are all screaming about being missing from our schools. You can't have it both ways. And as for the staff being "rude", you try manning the phone in that front office with all the demands put on you. There are certain times of the day (like between 2:30-3:00) when parents are urged NOT to come inside the school to pick up their child. Why? Because the faculty and staff are very busy preparing students to finish up assignments, collect their belongings and homework, and corral them to the proper exit where they will be picked up. It has been my experience that the faculty and staff at the Classical Academies are professional, warm, competent, and have a deep care and concern for our kids. Going the extra mile for a student is commonplace in these environments.
