Everyone needs to visit Mount Vernon and take in all the history it has to offer.
When visiting WDC be sure to make a day-trip to Mt Vernon. See how The Nation's First President hosted his guests and ran his plantation with slave labor. One interesting architectural feature is the faux marble paint on the exterior of the main house and the separate kitchen buildings.
Wonderful museum. Great exhibits focusing not only on Washington, but all the men and women that worked to run the house and work the lands. I’ve been in the May and June timeframe and there is usually a lot of school groups.
If you have been all over Washington DC, then you need to get to Mount Vernon, also. You could ride a bike here on the Mount Vernon Trail, which is about 18 miles from downtown Washington DC. Or, it is also accessible by car, however, not by the metro. It is a little like visiting Williamsburg and that there are many old buildings that are original.
The tour of the mansion is somewhat interesting, but it will not blow you away. However, it is worth a visit to see the tomb werewhere Washington and Martha Washington are buried. Nearby is a memorial to the slaves that worked at Mount Vernon and that is quite interesting to consider their situation in light of the liberty for which Washington fault. The orientation Center is first rate and there's a nice film to watch that gives you a feel for Washington and his military genius.
This museum is really new and up to date. It has excellent exhibits for children and adults; artifacts, movies, a childrens' center, etc. It was also very nicely decorated for the holidays. It complements the historic area of the estate very well.
