A GREAT way to spend the day, especially if a) you have kids b) you have and afternoon/evening flight out of Dulles airport or c) have any affection for aviation.
We had a flight out of Dulles Airport at 5pm and I know from being a little kid and going to the other air and space museum on the national mall that the air and space museums are just the coolest at any age. We spent about 2 hours and didn't quite get to everything, but felt satisfied. I would not go there unless you have at least 1.5 hours to check it out. I think the average visit is 3 hours. I highly recommend it!

So well done! Even people who aren't air or space lovers would find it interesting. This was our first time and we will definitely be back! My boys ages 6, 8, and 10 enjoyed it as well. I think the observation deck would be a great place to enjoy a sunset or host a small private event.

Great museum! Way too much to take in at once, I've been several times in the last few years and am still absorbing new things each time.
Love the way you can see each aircraft from multiple angles and heights given the various walkways.
Great place to bring a family group, people of all ages can enjoy the exhibits. It does require more walking, but they have a lot of benches throughout if someone needs to rest.

Love, love, love this place!! Entrance is free, but you do pay for parking - well worth the $15 that I paid. Absolutely in awe of the collection of aircraft and helicopters they have there. Some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen. The staff was helpful and friendly. They also have tour guides giving walking tours to groups throughout the day. We tagged along on one of the tours, and the guide really knew his stuff. We got so preoccupied looking at all the planes on display, we ended up stay there until it closed. Highly recommend this place. We will be back.

This lesser known museum is actually an annex of the Smithsonian air and space museum in downtown DC, and for aerospace nerds, it's definitely the better of the two. The museum is an aircraft hangar filled with as many planes as could be feasibly fit inside... Which is a lot! There's planes on the ground and planes hanging from the ceiling. You can learn about history and technology while exploring real, refurbished planes, helicopters, engines, and space vehicles from the wright brothers to the latest tech. In 2018, the exhibits include an experimental version of the modern F-35 fighter jet, and a replica of the Insight Mars lander. You can also take an elevator up to the observation tower, where you can watch planes landing and taking off from nearby Dulles International airport, and listen to live feed from the Dulles control tower. Finally, you can immerse yourself further with their flight simulator, space shuttle simulator, rides, and virtual reality booth. There are not many activities designed for very young children, but the love of the aerospace industry and seeing all the cool machines is fit for any age. The building is climate controlled, which is a plus compared to some other hangar museums I've been in. The building also contains an IMAX theater where you can watch movies about the history of aerospace (and sometimes random superhero movies), a McDonald's, and a gift shop. As of 2018, the museum itself is free, but there is a fee for parking. Prepare to spend 3-6 hours here if you're into aerospace, probably 1-3 otherwise.
