(October 10, 2018, 7:38 pm)Tough to rate Welbourne Plantation because we were not there for an overnight stay. We were attending the annual Cakewalk when two hot traditional jazz bands entertain from late afternoon until midnight, and a simple picnic dinner of BBQ sandwiches, beans and cole slaw is served. Habitues of the cakewalk bring their own tables, chairs and treats, which is well advised given that there is limited seating under the front porch. [Entrance fee for the event is currently $65.00.] Bands this year included Tuba Skinny and a fine collection of sidemen under the direction of clarinetist, Dan Levinson. Top-notch! Inside the plantation house, the guest and common rooms look comfortable and authentically furnished. The property has been in the same family for generations.

(October 24, 2017, 11:34 am)We stayed at Welbourne about six years ago, on a weekend trip away from DC. Ever since then, that trip has stayed with me as a treasured memory. I recently searched for pictures of it and was surprised to see that there really aren't that many. I will have to dig some up from our trip. It was magical. The house is stunning. Like going back in time. Beautifully lived in, fine antiques in everyday use. Happy dogs adorn the generous front porch. One accompanied us as we walked over meadows to look at the retired horses. If I were a horse, I would want to come here! The house has beautiful, rich colors and interesting items around every corner. The bedroom was beautiful, yet, "faded" in its beauty. Comfortable and peaceful. The bathroom gave me pause. It is an old house, though. That was the one thing that made me nervous. I think my discomfort was more related to the size /weight of the tub on the second floor of an old house. Ending on a very positive note, the breakfast was delicious and the most memorable I've ever had. The woman who cooked for us paid attention to every detail. She did an outstanding job and made the whole experience very special. I hope Welbourne is preserved for use of generations to come. It gives me a peace to know a place like it exists. One day, I hope to return.
