The curriculum caught me off guard and always seemed difficult to begin, even though the assignments seemed “easy” but it was resistance taking different forms. Life has improved and it’s easier to do difficult things. People around me have noticed a positive change and I’m more communicative as well. “Atlee Church on Moss Side Ave provides the host site for Richmond Young Life. The kids arrive & shoot hoops with Community Officer El Amin of the MRPD or play games. The van driver safely delivers the kids & dinner is served an hour after arrival. The church has an easy access kitchen, room for 75 to contemplate if their glass is half full or half empty & how to change the POV ahead to make a better, more successful life. The lesson is given via sound system & sometimes a slide show. A great opportunity to adjust with life in a safe place & a mentor. Very impressed that the church is generous in sharing their building. Colonel Durham, a Marine & retired MRPD chief, made a fine mentor for kids in troubled times & abrupting problems ahead. The church provided a safe & welcoming location that made its tapestry one of inclusion & stability with an authentic community officer as a mentor by example.”
