Since I live 5 mins away I come here often. It is a nice short hike with great views. Even when it is busy on weekends it is still nice.
It is great for families, pets and fishing. I sometimes drop my kayak in here and kayak out to Aquia Creek. The only thing I don't like about this place is the lack of waste bins. It is annoying carrying dog poop, or empty water bottles on a 2 mile walk.
Peaceful place for a leisurely walk. Free and open to the public, Government Island offers nice wide trails, about half of it accessible to those with walking disabilities. The first third is paved, second third is wooden boardwalk and last third is mulched path through wooded terrain. The last third has inclines, but otherwise flat path. Parking is free. Bathroom facilities consist of one portable potty in parking lot. Make sure to Google Government Park entrance to get the most accurate directions.
I love taking my kids here for a walk. First part is paved then it is a board walk over the wet lands and the rest is a forest trail. There is a stead flow of people but not crowded. Dog friendly and a port a potty in the parking lot. In the spring frogs lay eggs in the puddles in the parking lot.
Beautiful park for exploring, running, walking or just hanging out.
Ample parking, easy to navigate trails, lots of resting spots and beautiful surroundings. Also a great spot to look for Stafford Rocks.
Two routes to explore, the one to the right takes you into the area where sandstone was mined for many of the areas buildings and monuments, to include the iconic ones in DC. Great interpretive signs explain the park and it's ancient history.
A great spot for bird watching, learning about history, photography and more. Some photos I took here are feature snaps of the area.
A single porta-potty is at the entrance by the parking area.
