My wife and I arrived in Tacoma intending to rent a home for us and our two little daughters aged 3 and 1. Within a week of being in town we were really falling in love with the area and realized there was an open house down the street. We wandered over with our kiddos just to take a look and were warmly greeted by John and Catie, who were hosting the open house, and happened to live right across the street. We were initially really excited about the home and immediately took down their numbers in case we wanted to make an offer. After a second look we realized that this particular house was going to be far too great of a project for us, but we were absolutely sold on the idea of buying a house in the area.

As first time home buyers we had no idea really where to start. John offered a free two hour first time home buyers class and did an excellent job on clearly outlining the process, potential strategies, and general state of the current market. I was also curious about how one gets into real estate as a profession, how John and Catie split their tasks, and generally got to know them a bit better. Afterwards I still felt pretty new to the idea, but had a much better handle on what to do next.

John recommended an excellent lender, who was local and very responsive throughout the entire home buying process. We got pre approved for a loan and began the hunt a few days later. John was willing to meet several times a day, any day of the week, in locations that were sometimes over an hour away. His opinions on houses and neighborhoods in the area were always informative and insightful without being over bearing.

If it would have just been me by myself I probably would have bought the first house we walked into. But, luckily, my wife has a far higher standard. John was always accommodating to our whims during our month long search for the right place.

Working with John was an absolute pleasure. Being new to the area means we were always touring houses with our little ones, who were often screaming and running through yards and hallways. John always smiled and patiently tolerated us as a family. When the house we were buying needed smoke detectors he installed them all on his own time. He and Catie even gifted us baseball tickets to go see a minor league game with our kiddos.

As a lifelong Tacoma resident John is well connected and always able to set up inspections or make arrangements with contractors in a very timely manner.

When it came time to make an offer we were able to do the whole thing remotely, we were able to offer less than asking, when countered John wisely advised us to wait/do nothing and we ended up having our very first offer accepted. I will always remember that phone call and the tone of John’s cherry voice delivering the news.

Buying a house can be a real roller coaster & there were a few bumps along the way. I’m thankful we had a steady hand to guide us through the full experience, because in the end we got a beautiful house for our family.

I’m not really sure what is expected from a real estate agent as I’ve only ever had John and Catie, but I know never want a different one. I feel like we were very lucky to walk into one of our first great family friends in Tacoma. They are starting a little family of their own and I’m so glad that we ended up a couple of blocks down the road. I can’t say enough good thing about the job that the Douvilles did on finding us a perfect home. Thank you so much you two!!!
