Cedarburg Music

I am very grateful to have met Matt at Cedarburg Music. After playing guitar for 14 years I decided I needed a fresh perspective, and I signed up for my first ever guitar lesson – a very smart decision. I have taken private lessons from many different teachers for other instruments, and I feel Matt is the best teacher I have ever had for several reasons.

Matt takes you as you are, and points you in the direction YOU want to go with great advice. Never once has he ever forced "his opinion" about what's good music. Instead it's a discussion, and he gets you to think.

Matt knows his music theory. We often study modal theory, and focus on the intervalic separation of the notes in relation to chord tones with a keen ear toward dissonance and resolution. In my opinion, this is what separates quality musicians from those who just spray notes.

A lot of teachers I've had are extremely NOT creative. They just tell you to buy a book and do what it says, then the lesson comes and it's a rehearsal. Sorry; I can do that on my own. But with Matt, it's much different. If we work from a book, we focus on understanding and applying the concepts the book lays out. This involves discussion, interaction and playing notes not written in the book.

Most importantly, I am more inspired than ever with my playing, and my confidence in my compositions is growing. I believe I am getting better. Believe me, after over a decade of playing it's easy to feel like you're spinning wheels and not getting anywhere. It's a great feeling to know in my heart that I've got that ball rolling again!

I had been playing guitar for many years and had been mostly self taught and was looking to improve my technique. Coming to Cedarburg Music has expanded not only my understanding of the guitar but of music itself. Being able to have the one on one instruction focused on where I want to go as a musician has been incredibly valuable. Not only has my playing improved but I have also gained a better understanding as to the "why" of music. I cannot believe how much new information I learned in such a short time frame.
