Hiked portions of the red loop, orange loop and the overlook. The overlook is over grown in the summer but the wide trails and tall pines more than make up for it. Bugs were not bad during the middle of the day. Great trails!!
Great for difficult trail running with nice surface and many many hills
Pines, wildlife, a perfect 2.5 mile look beginner trail, and shaded picnic tables. This is a fabulous park for a hike, just don't forget the bug spray.
Looking for the green or orange trails? Head straight into the woods and then off to the right when you see the colored trail markers. The blue trail markers off the parking lot will take you to the yellow (ice age) trail. Just a heads-up as the signage leaving the parking lot is the most confusing part about this trail.
This is a great place to hike, especially if you want a little elevation and some gentle hills. It’s ideal for trail running: mostly dirt with a few rocky sections. We went in summer but could tell it would be awesome for cross-country skiing in the winter. There’s a pit bathroom off the parking lot and you’ll pass a campground bathroom about 1/3 of the way on the green loop. We weren’t actively birding here but saw and heard many species in the spring. It’s our favorite trail we’ve found within 2 hours of Chicago!
Brought my two dogs there for a hike and it was beautiful. There are a few trails to take of varying lengths, we went 4.2 miles and mixed a few trails together. The terrain is mostly hilly, trails are clean, nicely groomed and wide, and clearly marked at each intersection. I went on a Monday and only saw one other person there. One thing I didn't understand is why they did not have one single trash can at the entrance by all of the picnic tables, bathroom, and parking lot .They even had poop bags for dogs but I guess expected me to put it in my car and take it home. Maybe it was because it's off season . People still visit in the winter so they need to add at least one by the lot.
All in all a great visit!
