“Just want to say that I have the highest respect and appreciation for any boots on the ground civil service personnel (Fire, police, EMS, military, etc). As an ex police officer myself, I know just how tough and dangerous our jobs can be. That being said, please inform you firefighter with the white POV pickup truck - with the tiny low profile blue light on top to get a bigger light! I was traveling westbound on US 30, when I observed this white truck sitting on a crossroad. The position of the sun illuminated his little blue light on top - and I’m seeing it from the side, so it didn’t appear to be flashing - until I was almost at the crossroad. I realized it was flashing at the same moment he was lurching forward, as if to pull out in front of me, with his hand frantically pointing up at his little blue light. After I passed, he pulled out and traveled at a high rate of speed westbound to his turn (south into town). While I most certainly would have yielded for him to pull onto 30, had I realized the light was operating, this gentleman must understand that his light does not legally demand nor ensure right of way. It only request it. Me, understanding that volunteers need to get to the station ASAP, I have never impeded their haste, as police officer or citizen. However, when I first saw him lurch forward, I assumed he was going to pull out in front of me, which forced me to jump into the passing lane abruptly - out of instinct - to avoid a potential collision. Fortunately, there was no one next to me. I’m sure he’s a fine firefighter, but he must understand the risks of emergency vehicle operation, and understand that not everyone will see that tiny light flashing. There’s a reason fire trucks, ambulances and police cars also have sirens... because we are wise enough to understand that not everyone is going to see the lights. Stay safe!”
