“I was taken here recently for Severe Recurrent Major Depressive disorder and General Anxiety disorder, I was also cutting myself and in this situation I attempted to kill myself. I had been to 3 other facilities prior and none of them had done anything for me. When I arrived on north unit (the male unit) There were about 18 residents at the time. You must realize, a lot of the people here are going to be very severe, this isn't a place just to send your kid if they are dealing with a little bit of depression or some mild behavioral issues. This place is not luxurious at all, they don't pamper you, and you aren't fed gourmet meals everyday. In all honesty, that helped my situation. I am a particularly picky eater, however, being here is no place to be picky. In my opinion, the only major issue with this place is that the people who run it are trying to be cheap about it. The staff are all wonderful people, I have never had one bad experience with any of them. They truly care about the children, and I know that as fact because they seriously try to build a relationship with the residents whether or not they are behaving negatively. They don't forget your actions, but they don't hold on to grudges. There are staff working on the units who have been working there for YEARS, yet they still aren't payed well, and they don't leave. They care about the kids. It's truly sad they aren't rewarded highly for their hard work. Now, on to the topic of therapeutic holds. You probably have read reviews about residents being held against the wall, and they either have you take a pill or a shot. Holds are only used if you are a danger to yourself or others, they don't just do this to residents. I've seen multiple holds when I was on unit, and it was only in situations when a resident was having an outburst i.e becoming physically violent, destructive, self-harming behavior, or inappropriately touching another resident. What they do, is that they get you in a corner and get it so that you are facing the wall, and they raise your arms and hold them against the wall so you're incapable of moving or further harming others/yourself. They aren't pleasant at all. However, they are only used in extreme situations. The Unit is kept clean and tidy, every morning once you wake up you have to make your bed, and shower. They also promote good hygiene and provide deodorant, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and a tooth brush with tooth paste. Once a week, the residents help clean the unit. In this time we sweep the floors of the common areas and our rooms, mop the floors, and wipe down all surfaces with sanitary wipes. The bathrooms are also thoroughly cleaned by cleaners that come in while we're not on unit. Medications are taken every morning before breakfast, and after dinner for the people that need medications after dinner. Residents are allowed leisure time, and there also projects and team building activities the unit does. While I was there, we made posters on DBT skills and created clay animals which we also painted. A lot of my fellow residents I met there were also genuinely great people who had mental issues or behavioral problems. Being there seems intimidating and scary at first, but once you warm up to people in my experience they typically open up more. It is not a pleasant place to be at first, but if you open up about what you're dealing with, and try to make progress, it truly helps. The staff on north unit were incredibly caring, and they were absolutely raw and real. Some are kind enough to even share their personal possessions with residents in leisure time. One staff member would bring in comic books for north unit and let residents read them as long as they returned intact. A few of them are also incredibly talented. One would draw artwork of comic superheroes and villains for residents which were absolutely stunning, and another would also sing with the residents. This isn't a bad place, the staff aren't bad, the issue in my opinion is that they don't have the proper tools to work with.”

“Everyone was pleasant and helpful to me. I do think some nurses need to watch how they practice sterile technique. I witnessed someone dropping a syringe in the wrapper on the floor. It was picked up, opened and used on me to rinse a leg wound. The nurse didn't wash her hands after picking the syringe from the floor. What a good way to introduce bacteria into an immunocompromised patient.”

“Had our baby there last week and every single person was phenomenal. The nurses and techs in the L&D unit were amazing and helped provide a great birthing experience. I felt like they were extremely knowledgeable and maintained a calm demeanor when issues started to occur. Our OB is Julie Favia and I cannot begin to express how superb her care is. We were truly blown away by her expertise and knowledge when the delivery started to go south. She demonstrated her knowledge by still providing the birth I wanted and doing everything in her power to avoid a c-section. She also was a great patient advocate by speaking up for us when we wished to go home after 24 hours (we had another kiddo at home, nothing at all against the hospital). The nurses on the maternity unit were just as amazing. We never had to hit the call light for anything, they were continuously checking on me and baby, refilling my water bottle, and asking if I needed anything. Very quiet atmosphere for recovery. All other staff members were extremely nice, I don't have one bad thing to say. Highly recommend.”

“My experience here was phenomenal from the registration, to the surgery. Everyone was so nice and so helpful. I was a little skeptical but I’m glad I didn’t switch hospitals. Thank you St Mary’s staff for taking such great care of me!!”
