It's a shame that Google allows users that have not attended or do not have children attending this school review it. Over half of the reviews for this school are because of one incident that made the news. Over 75% of them don't have kids here, or have not attended here themselves. If you haven't been within a certain distance of the place you shouldn't be allowed to review it. Giving it 1 start because you're willing to judge without facts is unreasonable. Let me be clear, I do not agree with what happened, but I also will not brand the school because of the action of a handful of teenagers. Teenager do stupid things, often without thought of the way it will effect others, or be perceived.
I have lived next to this school for almost 10 years, with multiple neighbors, friends and my own child attending. The academic options provided by the schools in Tempe Union District are excellent overall. Even the brightest student can be challenged here. Don't let an over abundance of judgmental reviews persuade you. I have never met a more pleasant group of young adults than the many I have met during activities and events.
As a 15 year old Canadian, Leaving my home for the first time to relocate to a new country, I was terrified! That was 2000. We moved into the largest house i have ever lived it, and was enrolled into a school that locks you in, with a student parking lot full of cars i have only seen on TV. I was the new kid in a new country i knew nothing about, with the curriculum i knew nothing about, in a rich area...... Let me tell you..... Those 3 years with the staff and friends i made helped me graduate with honors!!! I didn't know Geography, History, Government (State or Federal), and I actually graduated with honors...
Yes its a rich area, Yes its intimidating but the school and the students welcomed me like I was an old friend! Now 15 Years after graduation I am The Chief Training Officer for a Restaurant Chain in Canada, and have spent the last 12 years in Corporate positions.
I had been to 12 different schools before DVHS and I had never made as good of grades or as many friends as i had there.
Defiantly made the most impact on my love as a child...
Thank you DVHS...
Oh........ Some of the best athletes we had were from different backgrounds and the Principal was Dr. MacDonald (he was African American)....... So I'm not sure how anyone can call the School or the District Racist based on a small fraction of students in the picture......
Great school! I personally achieved 18 college credits from the two years I attended. Best teachers and curriculum that I have attended. Excellent biotechnology and chemistry programs. Definitely the best school in the district. No inherent sense of racism exists. There is FAR more racism at all of the schools in the district compared to this one. Wish it was an open campus for lunch though..
I am glad Desert Vista is my former high school. The district is not racist in ANY way shape or form. I attended Desert Vista When Dr. Battle was the principal. Half of the staff/faculty is African american. Never witnessed racial slurs, incidents, or anything to do with the matter. I am black, and I am saying right now, the blame should not be on the school or the district. Please stop with the ignorant comments stating these girls only got 5 days so the school is racist. Nope. These 4 young women will have this STUPID mistake follow them for the rest of their lives. I am 100% sure they are not racist, it was just a DUMB joke. One of them dated my best friend who is black. They received death threats, suspension, lost their scholarships, embarrassed their families, lost friends, went VIRAL nationwide, and will probably never get jobs. And FYI not all of these girls are "white girls". Just because a non-black person does something racist doesn't make them "white". Lets stop the ignorance. This schools reputation should not be ruined because of 4 young women's mistakes. Saying hateful comments only makes you look just as bad. Stay positive, spread peace, and educate your haters with knowledge and not negativity. And finally, why don't black people stop saying the N word in music, as a term or endearment or just casually. I stopped and I feel completely confident on speaking my mind on subjects like this one.
