This place is cool. For fans of classic Hollywood, it was a major shooting location for 20th Century Fox for decades. A moderate hike will take you to the 4077 camp from the television show M*A*S*H. Stop by the visitors center for an overview of the local wildlife and a short video featuring some of the movies filmed there over the years. You'll almost forget you're in a major metropolitan area. I enjoyed my time here immensely.
One of the most beautiful places I have been to in the last several years. The park on the trail was enormous and majestic. It reminded me of the mountains of Palestine and Jordan valley. The area is very well taken care of. I believe in the fact that was tax money at work. I will definitely visit again and again.
Malibu Creek State Park is an absolute gem and the place to go for a hike in the summer. The landscape changes dramatically along the main trail (from the parking lot to creek head). One can expect to see everything from a lush green vegetation in the valley, ocean views from the peaks, and wide open golden meadows. There is a very unique atmosphere at creek head. The creek spills over a cliff and makes a perfect little freshwater pond that attracts such beautiful people. You will find a lot of young folks swimming, families camping, and a diverse crowd from all walks of life enjoying nature together. It reminds me of trips to let Geneva Wisconsin...it's just good people enjoying the outdoors. Do yourself a favor and get out of the hustle and bustle of city life and make your way to this park.
Hiking the Backbone Trail with friends is an amazing experience that an avid hiker/backpacker should consider when in the LA area. Although the amount of legit campgrounds are sparse, the scenery and weather is definitely worth it. Parking can be found all throughout and is cheap on a first come first served basis. If you come on a weekend you can probably catch a bunch of enthusiasts driving their cars through the canyons.
