I brought in my prized alabaster lamp whose homemade 1960s pull chain finally died to get rewired; the fellows in the store took a look, commanded me to wait and fixed it in less than 20 minutes while I waited, watched the other interesting customers have their specialized questions and queries answered one by one. For about $35, it was like a throwback moment of how household errands *could* feel like a social, sustaining part of one's day instead of an inhuman grind. I know this is really over the top, but it actually was a nice little blip in my day, and I got my favorite possession back and better than ever!”
