“The lumpen red A-frame peaks out through the rain, half illuminated by the orange flicker of the mercury street light over head. Ice-white light shines down from the awning and out of the walk up window on the front of the building. There is a hole in the middle of the building, like that tree-stump that used to be on all those postcards. Like that tree, this erstwhile-cabin has a car through the middle of it. Older model, Japanese, the color of your parents carpeting. A teenage employee steps out of the back half of the building and around the car, carrying a package of plastic lids into the kitchen area through the rain. You wonder if the kids who work here spend the slow hours complaining about the architect. “What kind of monster would design a fast food place where you have to leave the building to get spare napkins?” A Californian monster is the obvious answer. You approach the walk-up window as the creaky sedan pulls off into the sodden night. It takes the girl working the counter a minute to unlock the window and slide it open. It’s raining in Los Angeles, so you’re probably the only walk up order they’ve had in days. She explains that the only have vanilla soft-serve, but they can blend in chocolate if you like. The young man working the shift with her prepares your cup of corn syrup, cream, and cream-products with surprising care and skill. He wraps the cup in a single-ply napkin so your hand won’t get cold, and you jaywalk across the street between the sparse and hydrophobic traffic. Your Freezee is shockingly cold at first, but as you sit and watch 20 year old cartoons over the internet it approaches the half-melted slurry you prefer. You try not to go back too often, but you know you’ll be there again soon.”

I like that they are willing to tweak the menu, I didn't want chocolate chocolate chip pancakes and they accommodated my request. They have generous portions, plenty of space. It's not modern, it's an old fashion establishment with charm. They have regular classic car shows, I've seen them when I've driven by.”
