Great escape, wish there were more spots
Loved this place. Tons of wildlife. Nicest hosts. Just a tip though... Do not cook near or after dark. The raccoons are pesky and persistent.
Great place to go with friends. Park outside pay station if you don't plan on staying overnight. Chains go up around 9 or 10pm.
Where can you actually go "camping" in the wild, just a few minutes from downtown San Rafael. It feels like you are miles away! However, get there well before dark, as you do have to bring all your gear in. Apparently, the camp Host is not always the same, as some people have a good experience and some don't! My family members had fun, especially the youngest. But take all that you need with you! (And darn it, it's just always a more "secure" feeling if you have an adult male in your group. Anywhere, out camping, for that matter!) Sunrise is just heavenly from this nice State Park.
