“I have a very pleasant experience with this local shop while buying a digital Yamaha piano. Gary is very knowledgeable, and he treats you well. The offer he gave me was significantly lower than any other authorized dealer in the market, (both online and local). Sorry to hear that they had to downsize their shop, but they will be my to-go stop for any future musical instrument needs.”

“Our son started at L’Academy in San Mateo two months ago and he’s enjoying his time there! He talks about his teachers and friends all the time and looks forward to going to school (Although he still doesn’t like saying goodbye to mommy or daddy when he gets dropped off in the morning). I can tell the director Farina really cares about the kids, as she has gone above and beyond to help our son get acclimated to his first experience being at school. She also takes the time at the end of the day to give us updates on how his day went and even asks us (the parents) how we’re doing as she knows it’s a big transition for the adults too! The center uses a wonderful app that allows the staff to update us with notes about meals and potty, as well as when they went down for nap and photos of what they did throughout the day. We fell in love with it after our tour with the co-founder Helena. She was warm and welcoming, and took the time to answer all our questions. I appreciated the in-person tour and for allowing our son to play in the classroom when other schools only had virtual tour. Just prior to our son‘s first day, the director also set up a time for us to visit the school with our son again to get him acquainted with the classroom, his classmates and teachers. We appreciate the transparency that these visits provided, which ultimately helped us to decide to send our son here, and we couldn’t be happier with our decision! A few other bonus points: + Cleanliness, the school is brand new and only started enrolling students back in October 2021 + The teachers, Teacher Melissa and Teacher Wendy, speak excellent Mandarin, and introduce fun songs in Mandarin that my son remembers and sings all the time when he‘s at home + Excellent COVID protocol and weekly testing for the staff, children and families + A nut-free school, plus additional adjustments made to the menu to accommodate for our son’s multiple food allergies + Nutritious snacks and lunch provided + Flexible full-time/ part-time schedule + Helps with potty training but doesn’t require the child to be potty-trained to start In short, if you’re looking for a center that provides a stimulating program along with a language immersion experience for your child, I would highly recommend L’Academy!”

“Wonderful staff who truly care about their students. They communicate well with parents' and take feedback seriously. My child only spoke a handful of words when he first started Challenge and his language developed rapidly after a few months. I attribute it to the caring and attentive teachers. Thank you Challenge for all that you do for our kids! Highly recommend it!”

“I grad in 1979-80. I went back 20 yrs later as a T/A for spec.ed. Ms. Lackey was still there. I worked with Ms. San Gabriel and Dr.George. When I left had Mr Demelio as principal (later bacame Super.)and Mr Veronda as vice, (whom I heard was working with incarcerated young boys) The school was accredited then and im sure it only got better. It definitely had its share of derelict students, parents and a couple shady teachers but for the most part , it had some outstanding faculty that will always be remembered. We had Langstons in the 50's Turturici's in the 60's & Langstons again in the 70's. Love you Bayside❤aloha”

We have taken advantage of all three core areas on which the Riekes Center focuses - nature programs, creative arts programs, and physical fitness programs at all different age levels, and we are so impressed! Their summer programs are awesome too. The strength of this organization are the amazing people who are involved as instructors and administrators. Our family has truly enjoyed getting to know the special people who run this place - Gary Riekes is the best!”

Half Moon Bay High School

“This school has gotten better since the other ratings, and now has a plethora of AP classes, and I feel more than challenged. Some of Admin and Teachers do the best they can with the little the have (funding is always an issue, the computers in the labs still run Windows XP for Christ's sake!) but some teachers are so protected by their unions that they don't have to teach well and often don't as a consequence of being at the top of the totem pole thanks to working there for years. If that didn't make sense, just know that newer better teachers are more likely to get fired because they are newer. There is definitely a huge gap between the students in Advanced Placement classes and those in regular classes and I know very few of those on the other side. This gap is predominantly a socio-economic one, with richer families having their students take more challenging courses, while those less fortunate simply look to graduate and often work part-time after school. Those on the advanced side are getting test scores just as high as students at SI or MA, but they are offset by the other 60% of the school who preforms at or below average. As a whole, HMBHS does not compare to other schools in the Bay Area, such as Saint Ignatius, or Menlo-Atherton. HMBHS will never be a badge of exclusive honor, because its very composition, identity and mission work against that. It's intended to be accessible and to try and counter, and change, the fact that in the United States, according to a study from a few years ago, fewer than 10% of children from families in the bottom quartile of income are likely to get a college diploma by the age of 24, while more than 70% of families from the top quartile are. HMBHS functions primarily to get students who weren't originally intent on going to college into a two-year community college. That's not to say that if you have plans to go to a UC that you are unable to. Many, many alumni have gone onto prestigious universities - UC Berkely, UCLA, UCSB, Northwestern, U-Penn, USC, I could go on... - it just takes some extra work to set yourself apart from the rest and use tools that are meant for other purposes to get the job done. At HMBHS, success won't be handed to you, you have to work for it, which in a way is even better. I gave this review a 5/5 because I respect the mission. However, I would probably give it a 4/5, but didn't because clearly the school could use a better rep. While the mission is a noble one, the school survives because of teachers who put in 110%, but they are increasingly transferring to other districts where the pay is higher, among other reasons. Hadley, Davis, Lusear, and many others have been forced to use HMBHS as a stepping stone onto institutions which pay more for their hard work. Just this semester, the principle, superintendent and his assistant all stepped down from their positions for varying reasons, chiefly low pay and the annoying union who stabs its associates in the back. This forces the high school to hire young guns who can sometimes be amazing teachers who are more able to relate to their students as a result of their youth (Stagg, Svendsen, Centoni) but often times leads to disasters (Poma, Brown and the librarian who threw away books (!!!)) who, thankfully, have all been removed. At the end of the day, the school is crippled by low funds, an annoying union and a fast teacher turn-over rate, but is held together by the alumni donations (in the form of some unprecedented sports facilities), amazing, but under-represented teachers and a very strong parent foundation that somehow manages to keep things moving forward. Hope this helps someone!”

Not only is she compassionate, understanding and encouraging, but she is easy to work with in finding what works best for her schedule and yours to set up a session. I could go on about the many amazing things that Paula is but to fully understand would be to simply meet her and trust you are in the best of hands when it comes to a genuine healer and spiritual guide. She is amazing and I love her dearly! Thank you Paula ✨”

It has had many changes to the campus in the last few years including a large shade structure so the kids don't have to eat in the sun, two new gardening areas, and several other smaller artistic enhancements such as a little free library and various tree murals.”

“There are two preschools housed on the Turnbull campus -- a fee-based mandarin immersion school and a state-subsidized English speaking preschool. This review covers the fee-based mandarin immersion school. Our daughter attended Turnbull for the second half of her Pre-K 4 year (she is now a 1st grader in the school next door) and our son is in his second year at the school (in Pre-K 4 after completing Pre-K3 last year) and we couldn't be happier with the education they received/are receiving. We wanted an immersive mandarin speaking, play-based and not-too-academically-intense environment for the kids. Turnbull is great -- from the administrators to the teachers -- we've found everyone to be caring, conscientious, and enthusiastic. The teacher-student ratio is great -- there is a main teacher and two assistants for each classroom of 18 to 22 students. I like that there doesn't seem to be too much turnover since consistency is so important in challenging programs like dual-language ones. My daughter and son had the same wonderful Pre-K 4 teacher -- and I'm hoping my youngest (2 years away from attending) will also have her. She, and the other teachers I've interacted with at Turnbull, are very dedicated to their students and I've always felt that I could go to them with any concerns I may have. My son loves going to school. The school year is arranged around weekly units where the students learn mandarin in context. Occasional field trips, regular music and movement classes supplement the day-to-day activities. Every year there are three or four performances where the kids show off their singing skills and classroom work. There is some character recognition lessons, but from what I've seen it's low pressure and meant to enrich the language learning. Overall, we are very satisfied with Turnbull. The only caveat is that both the Principal and the Enrollment Coordinator are retiring this year. Hopefully, they'll be replaced with equally great people, but that would be the only question mark I would have going forward.”

“Can't say enough good things about St. Paul's! Teachers are so fantastic, super experienced, really nurtured my children's confidence, independence, and curiosity. Great big playground with lots of outside time, wonderful art projects with a focus on art as a process, which I appreciated. (Meaning kids aren't pushed to make perfect little projects, their art is their art and it's about the experience of making that art.) Snack provided. Play-based, SUPER parent community.”
