UCSC Arboretum

Address: Santa Cruz, CA 95064, USA

Park

“Wow- what a great place to visit! I went to Santa Cruz to see Henry Cowell Redwoods park and wondered what else was in the area. I saw on Maps that UCSC had an Arboretum, open to the public, so went. So many neat plants, from the other world places with a Mediterranean climate. The Australian garden, the South African, the New Zealand, all were superb. Well worth the $5 parking fee. If you find yourself in Santa Cruz, definitely make the visit!”

Moore Creek Preserve

Address: Moore Creek Trail, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, USA

Park

“A nice isolated place to go on a countryside adventure that's barely outside town. There's basically only one trail (the website says it's 2.5 miles round trip but it's probably closer to 3) but it's a nice one that takes you through a mix of rolling grassy hills with cows and an oak forested ravine with a creek. During the rainy season, the hills are a very appealing green, but there are some mud puddles that take up the entire trail that you have to worry about. Parking at the Highway 1 entrance is limited but possible at a a small turnoff and the views of the bay are very nice”

Santa cruz, wilder ranch

Address: Coast Rd, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, USA

Park

“Historic mid 1800s house and buildings from the old Wilder ranch and Creamery. Ample parking with access to a beautiful stretch of coastline trail. The trail is fairly easy with little change in elevation and has dramatic views of bluffs and ocean. This is a great place for a family outing or a quiet hike with wonderful vistas.”

Riverfront Regional Park

Address: 7821 Eastside Rd, Healdsburg, CA 95448, USA

Park

“I love this park! The huge redwood trees at the entrance are gorgeous, with a great picnic area for large groups under their canopy. The trail around the lakes is wide and easy most of the way, until you get to the rocky area between the lakes that requires some scrambling when the water level is high. Nice spot for lake fishing, or head to the Russian River on the edge of the park. Fun trail along the edge of the lake with nice shady spots for relaxing with a good book or picnic. Some years I've seen the egret's nesting and heard the squawks of the chicks high in the trees - it's quite a sight! Great for a peaceful solo hike to enjoy the quiet and beauty, or for families to explore among the trees and catch a fish. And it's only 15 min north of Santa Rosa, right outside of quaint Windsor.”

“They used to have a port-a-john close by but looks like they don't now. Edit: Anywho, it's a small park and typically quiet compared to City Park. For obvious reasons. There's one jungle gym and a set of swings. A few picnic tables and a decent sized field to throw a ball around or maybe fly a kite or walk a dog or two. Signs posted that dogs are only allowed if they are on a leash. It's also near a local bus stop.”

Peter J. Shields Oak Grove

Address: 1 Shields Ave, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Park

“The Shields Oak Grove is a part of UC Davis Arboretum. It’s located just across of Ruth Risdon Storer Garden along Garrod Drive. The Grove greets you with the most beautiful restroom in the world. The outer walls of the restroom are decorated with a lovely mosaic artwork dedicated to oaks. The mosaic compositions are reflecting various scientific themes, including the oak phylogenetic tree. It could be a starting point of your journey through the grove. Over hundred oaks of various species are there, and many of them are accompanying with ceramic colorful plaques. Pay attention to plaques, they are created with love and with an intention to deliver the message. I was amazed by tree diversity, artistic design, and educational value of this place. Nearly everything became very interesting as soon you start to study it. The grove is different over different seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter. It's never the same. The grove is a local treasure, where you can relax, and get in touch with the nature.”
