Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve trailhead

Address: 2690-2698 Terminal Blvd, Palo Alto, CA 94303, USA

Park

“A must if you enjoy seeing waterfowl. This was a beautiful and peaceful hike in the morning to see different types of waterfowl and birds in general. The hike is away from any town and is very peaceful. The city did a great job with this preserve!”

Byxbee Park

Address: 2375 Embarcadero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94303, USA

Park

“Wide open public space with a number of walking and biking gravel paths. Enjoy views of the Bay from the ever so slightly elevated viewpoint, the geese around the ponds that call this area home and airplanes on their approach of the Palo Alto airport.”

Indian Tree Open Space Preserve

Address: Novato, CA 94947, USA

Park

“Beautiful area. There are not many views, but the forest is very diverse and looks great. I went on the Big Trees hike on a rainy Sunday, started at 8am. I haven’t met anybody until 10.30am. The full loop took me about 3 hours. The parking is on the street, there is plenty. The hike is steep at times, but overall I’d rate it as moderate. I haven’t seen any wildlife except for birds and lizards. I saw many lizards were right on the trail. They move slowly (not your mountain lizards), so need to watch out not to step on them. The hike is very green overall. There is a lot of shade. Very pretty and relaxing. I think it’s a great hike in the woods, just 1 hour from San Francisco. Highly recommended.”

Alameda Creek Staging Area

Address: 34988 Eastin Dr, Union City, CA 94587, USA

“The parking lot at the end of narrow road is spacious. The unpaved north Alameda Creek trail can be accessed via a steep ramp. Turn right on trail to head towards the bay. Or a bettter option for bikers is to turn left then cross the Union City Blvd and then right again on the paved south side trail.”

Chabot Staging Area

Address: 22323 Redwood Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94546, USA

Park

“What an amazing hike! Hiked from here all the way to Valle Vista Staging Area near Moraga, 17 miles, and rarely saw a soul. You'll need an EBMUD permit (5 years for $30 I think), lots of water, a meal, and strong knees. There is quite a bit of up and down. If the cows are blocking the way, just walk towards them and they'll move. And don't step on salamanders!”

“Very nice park, quiet and calm, in the middle of the forest. It is from 45 min from San Francisco counting the traffic, it is a long way but it is perfect if you plan to stay more than one night and considering that San Francisco streets are not good to move in trailers or motorhome as you have several ups and downs plus the traffic. Beautiful and Full hookups , perfect for stay 3 days and the staff is very kind.”

Dinosaur Hill Park

Address: 901 Taylor Blvd, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523, USA

Park

“Dinosaur Hill Park has been here since I can remember. (1955) It is right in back of the house my Dad built at that time on Random Way. I loved climbing the hill up to the top so I could see the incredible view!!! I went there December 28th 2018 for the first time since 1960. WOW!!! The day was so clear and the view was just spectacular!!! I took some pictures that I added the photos to this place on Google maps. The only reasons I didn't give dinosaur Hill Park five stars is because there are no facilities here and it really needs some work for access especially for the handicapped. There is just a dirt path and there are some rickety stairs not to be trusted. This area is not really accessible during the rain or when it's really wet. There is no pavement and and no cement. Just dirt and mud and grass. There is a handicap parking place and the pathway is accessible if it is dry. Another thing I was disappointed in was that people have spray-painted graffiti on the interesting natural rocks and boulders. Please be respectful of this place”
