The alluvial fan was formed by the Lawn Lake flood in 1982 that swept a massive amount of rock down Roaring River. There is a parking area on either side and a bridge leads over the river downstream of the fan. I rock hopped into the river and up to the base of Horseshoe Falls. I think the waterfall continues further up but I didn't climb any higher. Overall, a nice spot and easy hike to see a waterfall and the destructive power of water.

A very rocky area with different self-paced activity options: sit near the edge of the rushing creek and dip your toes in the icy water; go fishing downstream; or hike up the steeper sections around the boulders for a neat view of the area. Currently there is construction on a new bridge over the creek - until that's complete you're essentially stuck on the east or west side of the water unless you want to go boulder hoping.

I have been to the West Alluvial Fan Trailhead four times now. It is not a long hike, but it is a difficult one due to all the rocks that you have to climb over and due to the fact that there is not actual trail. You climb over rocks in order to see the waterfall. So I would recommend some good hiking shoes or boots. But once you get to the waterfalls, it is a lovely area. If you climb high enough, you get a very nice view of the valley. Definitely bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. They are finishing up building a bridge since people will try to walk across the river rapids to get to the other side. It is a safety feature.

A short hike from the first (east)parking lot, we prefer the second one (west) as you are able to ascend the waterfall easier. There is a large boulder field to navigate. They are constructing a wheelchair accessible trail.

Gorgeous to view from the car, but a strenuous hike for those who boulder well. If you want a milder stroll cross the road ant the second parking area and walk the Sand bar. There is no path but a short walk will take you to the Fall River(Creek).
Swift water during the melt and slow fishing water in mid to late summer. Remember you need a valid fishing license and this area is catch and release only.
Be mindful of wildlife, elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep and bear frequent this area. Remember to view wildlife from a safe distance.
