(January 14, 2015, 2:44 pm)On the recommendation of an experienced nurse, I went to Dr. Chalal's office about a year ago after a weightlifting incident caused me SIGNIFICANT shoulder pain. He diagnosed me with arthritis in my AC joint, a torn labrum and fluid accumulation in my deltoids following an MRI. I was really impressed that - despite being a surgeon (and a lauded one at that) - he never pushed me to get surgery. In fact, he cautioned me against rushing into it. The rehab process would be long, painful and costly, and the efficacy of labral repair surgery isn't well established. We opted to start out with the conservative approach: rehab exercises and oral cortizol, which eliminated 90% of my pain.
Dr. Chalal talked to me very frankly, but also diplomatically about my prognosis, which unfortunately is that certain types of movements (i.e. overhead presses) may be problematic for the rest of my life. But he also assured me that my normal activities wouldn't be a major cause for concern. So far, everything he said has held to be true.
Dr. Chalal's reputation is well deserved.
