Over the course of my dad's multi-month journey through the healthcare wringer, the only other setting in which I saw comparable levels of competency+compassion was the ICU. Excellent patient/family communication and highly engaged, accessible nursing leadership as well. I was lucky in that I was able to visit my dad a lot during his stay, so I also saw just a lot of interactions between patients and staff in general. There is clearly a culture of always doing the right thing for the patient even if "no one's looking," and the nurses, aids, and other staff are genuinely kind to patients experiencing memory loss or confusion.”
