River Raisin National Battlefield Park

This is a small but interesting stop on the NPS book. They have clean restrooms and are even dog friendly.
Not far off the interstate so I would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

The park facility is relatively new and quite impressive. There is a very well done 25 minute movie on the earlier events and battles at River Raisin. There are several displays at the Visitor center, huge diorama of Frenchtown , and a gift shop. There are paths outside to tour the battlefield with historical markers. Overall gained a great understanding and appreciation of what happened here and overall northwest frontier. Need to mention that the ranger at the Visitors Center - Tony - was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable.

One of the newest parks in the Park Service. They are working hard to create a state of the art facility. When the educational center is up and running it will be a fantastic field trip for schools and other groups looking for a hands on experience.

River Raisin is for those who love history. This is the site of the worst American defeat in the War of 1812, and of the bloodiest battle in Michigan's history. There is a new visitor center just west of the battlefield with new exhibits being built. If you live in southeastern Michigan and you have kids, this would be a great place to take them to get to know the National Park Service. The visitor center has passport books, patches, books about national parks, nature guides, and everything else needed to generate a child's enthusiasm for our nation's protected lands.

I am really looking forward to the things to come at this National Battlefield Historic Site. The Park Ranger was extremely informative and did a great job with the kids and their Junior Ranger Program. The movie was worth the 10.00 for 4+ in a family. We enjoyed learning about the War of 1812. Beautiful diorama. When the village is complete it will be amazing.
