“first met Dr. Prokurat in the emergency room at Centrastate Hospital. He was the on call surgeon and I was in great distress with a small bowel incarceration related to hernia. It turned out it was my lucky day. That sounds odd but it is true. Dr. Prokurat informed me that I would have to be admitted to the hospital and have surgery the following day, a Sunday. I was petrified. At 50 years old I never spent a day in the hospital since I was born and I had hoped to keep it that way. It was later in the evening when I finally got to a room and I was surprised when Dr. P stopped in, after 9pm, to check on me. He explained more about the surgery, answered my questions and then gave me a reassuring pat on the leg and said he would see me tomorrow. I knew I was safe. The next morning Dr. P again came to check on me and we talked about the fact that my weight was a concern for my well being. He asked if I had ever thought about weight loss surgery. Had I thought about it, of course. Had I done anything about it, of course not. Too much fear. Dr. P made a very simple statement to me: "I will help you with that". I had only met the man 12 hours ago but somehow I knew that he was telling me the truth. He wanted to help me. Not blame me or degrade me or make me feel bad. He wanted to help me. I am not a big fan of doctors. This one is different. When I see him I am reminded that everything is going to be alright. I look forward to seeing him. I have never had that experience with a doctor before. I am recovering well from my first surgery and planning for my next. I take each step with confidence because I know if I stumble Dr. Prokurat will be there to help me. He is a great surgeon but more importantly he is a caring, compassionate man. I could not be more grateful to him.”
