My go-to place to meet friends and family for a nice hike.
Amazing hike for beginners!
Took the blue trail first, second white trail, then orange trail and finally, yellow blue trail for exit.
The pictures say it all!
The park is wonderful and well maintained. The rangers are all friendly and were very helpful. I forgot my hiking poles but they offered me a pole to borrow. Right on!!
I hiked to the Stone Ruins. Very nice.
One of the largest, if not the largest, forested reservations in this whole area, there were many scenic trails and rocky outcroppings, including "tripod rock," where several boulders (one very large) are mysteriously balanced, each on three small rocks. There is a visitor's center there with a bathroom and a few interesting exhibits that tell the past and present stories associated with this mountain and the once called "Turkey Mountain" a short walk away.
Easy and moderate hiking trails. Good for children and the elderly.
A lot of educational programs for children. The parking lot near Visitor Center is quickly filled up on weekends. Roadside parking is okay. Boonton Avenue actually divides this natural and historic park into two areas: Pyramid Mountain area where you can see the New York City skyline and a glacial erratic known as Tripod ; Turkey Mountain area where you can climb up 100 stone steps and see stone ruins. Stop by Lake Valhalla Overlook, beautiful and very popular place. The Blue trail from the parking lot to 100 steps is not well maintained. It is swampy in summer. You better avoid this trail and instead take Y trail near the parking lot.
