Breakneck Ridge Trail

  This is a really popular hike. I went in the fall when it was only 50 degrees out, and that was great, can't imagine doing this in hot weather. The first part of the hike involves going up a steep incline to get to the viewpoints. It's not a long distance, but the elevation change makes it feel like it. At certain points there's an easier route that avoids some of the harder bits. Still though, a lot of the more difficult areas are unavoidable. There were a lot of other people on the trail, so you can see how other people are getting up the rocks if you get stuck. There are a couple viewpoints on the way up to the summit, and they're all beautiful. There's a great view of the Hudson, and you can see Bannerman (also called Pollepel) Island, with the castle on it. Once you reach the summit, it's a pretty easy hike down. It's not too steep, but it can be slippery around areas where there are streams running through - especially in the fall when there are so many leaves on the ground. All told, the hike is worth the challenge, but be prepared with plenty of water and snacks.

  Fantastic hike.
  
  It started off with a high difficulty due to climbing rocks and boulders. But eases off to forested dirt trails.
  
  The trail is very crowded due to ease of access for city hikers from the Metro North train station a few minutes walk from the start of the trail.
  
  Try to get to the trail early to avoid the crowds. If you get there in the afternoon, expect bumper to bumper traffic just like the city. ????????

  Breakneck Ridge is the best hiking trail in US if not the world. Medium difficulty but very rewarding with views at rest plateaus. Commanding views just get better the higher you go. Scouts and cadets love it. See mountains in distance with Hudson River in foreground. View of Breakneck on right from West Point.

  This trail was amazing! The beginning (white trail) was a bit strenuous at first with the rock scramble. But the visual payoff is huge! You can bring a dog, I saw a few up there. We had lunch on the top of the ridge, it was beautiful.

  Very fun trail that gets you terrific views of the Hudson very quickly. Don't get nervous by anything the trail staff try to tell you before going. It's a very safe hike with no real danger / technical skills needed...
  Recommend having a snack as well as at least a liter of water (ideally two) per person as it can get rather hot in the summer. Once your at the top the trail is flat for remainder of the hike.
