My son and I joined the school as soon as he was old enough to attend (age 8) and have loved every class. I had no martial arts knowledge (other than watching movies) and am not an athletic person by nature, but every week I'm able to push myself further, learn, become more flexible, and get stronger, while still having fun. The mixed indoor/outdoor is modest but that's also what makes it special - the school is wholly focused on the practice and the people, not appearances. Along with Sifu, the community of more serious Kung Fu practitioners and teachers have warmly welcomed my family into theirs, creating a diverse group of friends and mentors that I really love.
On the recommendation of a friend I started studying Wing Chun here a little over a year and a half ago, and it is easily one of the better decisions I have ever made. This is the real deal--no corporate, cardio Kung Fu nonsense, but just traditional Chinese training in direct lineage from Ip Man himself. I broke my ankle a few months into my training, but was able to come back and continue to challenge the limitations of my injury because of what a wonderfully supportive Kung Fu family Sifu has cultivated here. It's also a great reflection of Brooklyn's diversity, with people of all races, ages, and genders coming together to learn in a friendly community. I've lived in New York for over a decade, and this feels like one of the most genuine hidden treasures I've found here.
I have been practicing Ving Tsun at this school for about a year now, and I really love it. If you want a serious and traditional Kung Fu school, this is for you. But don't be intimidated, everyone is very kind and friendly and will help you learn the techniques, as well as the culture surrounding Kung Fu. This school really teaches Kung Fu as a lifestyle, far more than just a workout. I am so glad I found this place! Highly recommend!!
Moy Yee Kung Fu is the real thing, its everything the corporate schools are not. Many students have been going to the school for years. It's under the radar, as they don't advertise. You must be interviewed by the Sifu Henry Moy Yee. You must have humility, respect and to work hard, and you will be rewarded with kindness and patience, but you have to try.
Sifu has trained with some of the most talented instructors in China, his depth of knowledge I only begin to fathom. I feel very lucky to have found this school, its like a family. Sifu told me just the other day, what he offers is a treasure, what you do with this treasure is up to you.
This institution is an excellent place to learn and train kung fu. A true gem of not only Brooklyn, but of the martial art world. It has improved my stamina, flexibility, health, and created mental clarity in my life. I find Moy Yee Kung Fu a warm inviting place to train with a professional and family environment. I highly recommend it based on these experiences.
