“Nathan’s martial arts story starts when he was four years old and first asked us to do karate. Two years later, we finally agreed and Nathan took his first karate class. From the beginning, Nathan loved the entire experience. Unfortunately, his enthusiasm was not quite matched by his self-control. Nathan’s struggle is to maintain his focus and always strive to do his very best, rather than be distracted by the many social distractions around him. Over the years, he has continued to improve in this area. Just last week, his teacher told us how much Nathan has improved in striving to do his best and maintaining this direction without help. We are very proud of Nathan’s improvements and look to see continual improvement in this area. My Martial Arts Story Nathan Arnoldi 10/25/18 My martial arts story starts in the summer after first grade. For Valentine’s Day in first grade, I got a postcard inviting me to try karate for free. My parents took a little convincing, but they finally let me try it that summer. I had a mini-lesson where Mr McCreery taught me some of the basics of karate like natural stance, always having eye contact and using “Yes, sir”. My parents and I decided that karate would be a neat thing to do, so I started to attend classes. After three years it was time to test for my junior black belt. This was a challenge for me because even though they prepared us very well, I still didn’t know exactly what it would be like, and I was very nervous. When it came to do my test, all my butterflies left my stomach and I persevered through the day. I felt accomplished and appreciative at the end of the day when I received my black belt. Since that time, I have worked on honing my skills and preparing for the senior black belt test. I still feel nervous about the process, but I know I am prepared. This was extra challenging this time, because in June I broke my arm. I was not allowed to do karate until the beginning of September. When I returned, I felt rusty and out of shape, but I have worked hard to get back on track. I look forward to the physical and mental challenges of that day, and hope to have success again.”
