“Peaceful, quiet sanctuary, where you can take a restful walk. Trees and shrubs are labeled for those who want to learn their names. The Phyllis Fischer Memorial Walk features flowers from her former garden. Tours led by volunteers can be arranged in advance for individuals or groups. Our guide, Nancy Merrill, was very knowledgeable about the trees and plants, as well as the history of the former Kelsey Nursery.”

Awesome exhibits that are very well done and interesting about state and local natural history. Great planetarium. There's a very nice nature trail at the back of the property that shouldn't be missed. They offer military, senior, and student discounts off of the already reasonable prices. Great place for all ages. Would highly recommend!”

Address: 1702 N 13th St, West Columbia, TX 77486, USA

Museum

“Beautiful historic location. The plantation house is gorgeous and so peaceful. We only did the self guided tour but definitely plan on doing the guided tour one day. There is a fee to get in but it is reasonable and totally worth it, even if you only visit once. They also put on events throughout the year during certain holidays. Watch out for mosquitos when you go because this last year was pretty bad and it was hard to enjoy walking the property with all of the mosquitos eating us up. So definitely bring lots of bug spray for your visit!”

Treefrog Trailhead, Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge

Address: 1620 Cypress St, Liberty, TX 77575, USA

Museum

“To find this trailhead, go to the end of Cypress Street, get on the levee, and go south on the levee about 30 yards. The markers to enter will be on the west side of the levee at the right of way. Follow the orange markers and stay on the south side of the pipeline right-of-way. Follow the orange marks in the trees along the tree line until you get to the bayou with the bridge. If you go right at any point and see deer stands or picnic benches, you are now on private property and trespassing. As long and you follow the orange marks, you are on the trail. Tree Frog Trail ends after about 1/4 mile and meets up with the Boggy Boots Loop, another trail marked by orange marks in the trees. There are 5 miles of trails back in there, enjoy! Oh, and there are a lot of scenic areas too!”

There were lots of people and a couple schools visiting on our visit, but there was lots to do and nothing seemed super crowded. Seriously fantastic!”

"Fire Tower"

Address: Enola Low Grade Trail, Conestoga, PA 17516, USA

Museum

“Fire Tower is a location on the Atglen & Susquehanna Railroad Trail. In the Spring of 1959, an underground fire began here, under the eastbound main track of the Pennsylvania RR’s main east-west freight route through Lancaster County to New York, which handled more than 60 freight trains per day. The fire apparently developed in coal dirt used as fill during construction of the large fill over Boatman’s Run in 1905, and this coal was apparently ignited by brush fires in the dry Spring of 1959. On July 21, 1959, 2 inches of rain fell. It is believed this moving ground water penetrated the dirt in the Boatman’s Run fill and, under hydrostatic pressure, contacted the burning coal fire, causing a flash steam explosion which blew out the river side of the fill. The fire continued to burn until Spring, 1961. During this period, the railroad dismantled 675 feet of the eastward main track and hired the DuPont Company to extinguish the fire. A temporary interlocking was installed to route trains in both directions over the one track remaining in service. This temporary manned interlocking was housed in a small building given the name “Fire Tower.” After the fire was extinguished in 1961, the eastward main track was rebuilt, and the temporary interlocking and the “Fire Tower” structure were removed. No photographs of "Fire Tower" are known to exist. The area is still known as “Fire Tower.” The tracks were entirely removed in the 1990s and in 2011 and the railroad roadbed was converted to a 29-mile long trail. The trail is mapped as and locally known as the A&S Low Grade Trail, but it is also called the Enola Low Grade Trail. Approximate coordinates for the old Fire Tower structure are Lat 39.911806, Long -76.37920.”

JWR Automobile Museum

Address: 2 Eleanor Ave, Frackville, PA 17931, USA

“Very interesting collections. I am surprised that there are no entries and photos here. You can see here a car with a hybrid gasoline-electric drive from 1929! Three hybrid cars were made to order by Colonel Edward Howland Robinson "Ned" Green. There is a very interesting story behind it. The restored Stearns-Knight sedan looks great. It's worth seeing.”
