  UPDATED 5/21/18 - Basis Independent McLean provided my 5th-grade son with another outstanding year of education. In his second year at Basis, he met new challenges that pushed him to work harder, study smarter and find the required individual academic support available from all Basis teachers. Basis Independent McLean is not an "old school" school. Tuition is far more affordable than any other D.C. area private school. The constant demand for donations, endemic to all other private schools, raises the cost of attendance, not the quality of education. Donation pressures, financial and social, don't exist at Basis Curriculum Independent schools. All Basis Curriculum schools require diligent and enduring academic effort. Hard work that can produce academic excellence is valued. We recognize and reward academic achievement while teaching kids to understand, as in life, everybody cannot expect to be a "winner." While Basis does not label its Curriculum as a STEM program, my son tackles challenges in mathematics and science, before and after English or Classics class every day. As for the Latin course, well that’s not his “favorite.” Performing in a stage review, written and produced by our talented music and performing arts teachers, was a great experience. Soccer teams, math clubs, fencing and computer programming clubs, are just some of the after-school activities offered every day. I can’t believe Basis now heads into comp exams, finals and year-end individually designed projects that are an essential component of Basis Curriculum schools. My son had a tough time this year, he met many challenges in the Basis academic environment, and prevailed! Lasts year in 4th grade, he was in the "90's Club" every grading period, with a GPA of 90% and above. Not so this year. 5th-grade was far more difficult than 4th grade. Last year he had a subject expert teacher and a learning expert teacher. The learning expert teacher accompanied kids from classroom to classroom, providing (a lot of) guidance on organizational tools students need at Basis, and people need in life. 5th grade puts students onto a path of self-reliance requiring implementation of organizational skills they (should have) learned last year. That change was difficult for my son initially. Bur with some support from dad, he got on the required path. It took him two grading periods to understand pre-algebra requires lots of hard work every day, week after week. With boundless energy, my son’s fantastic math teacher pushed him along, and with daily homework assistance that he finally asked his mother for, he got on top of his math. The Basis Curriculum, brilliantly implemented at Basis Independent McLean, requires my son use all the self-discipline and perseverance he can muster to apply his innate abilities and find academic success. As an aside, I’ve heard folks disparage our school because it's new, or it's experiencing growing pains, or it appears to be less than settled as some administrative positions have predictably turned over. The critical words could not be further from the reality at this Basis school! Fundamentals are rock solid here. Our educators are among the best throughout the D.C. region - Basis picks-off only top talent from schools public and private!   If you can just focus on your child's experience in the classroom, you will be happy here. Great teachers. Great administrators. This place would be great if they could just figure out everything that goes on OUTSIDE of the classrooms. Billing, lunches, facilities, front office staff, after school programs, field trips, classroom furniture and materials, security, book ordering--all a mess. They have lost two Heads of Schools when all they really need to lose in order to be productive and successful is their Head of Operations. She and her team are rude and unorganized. She often makes promises about facility updates that never end up happening. She has had no experience working in a school before this, so it should come as no surprise that she isn't capable of dealing with school-related issues. Although, school leadership experience clearly isn't important to BASIS, as the CEO is a former electrical engineer who knows absolutely nothing about education or working in schools. He only got the job because his aunt and uncle founded and own the company. If you've ever had the pleasure of hearing him speak, you'd quickly lose even more respect for the guy and the schools he is attempting to run. Despite the CEO and the Head of Operations both having no prior education-related work experiences, they are often the last resort for answers to questions..that they can't answer. So, if you care about all of that, this isn't the place for you. If you care about your child having great teachers and learning at a high level, come here. Hopefully the teachers and administrators don't get fed-up with all of the above and leave, because they're all that's keeping families.

  My son is in 2nd grade at Basis, and he loves it ! They have advanced education , so he is learning well , nice facilities , and good teachers ! If you want a wonderful school for your child , basis is a good place to send your kid .

  My child's transition to BASIS Independent has been a great step forward. He really enjoys his teachers and classmates. Most important thing is that he really enjoys going to BASIS and learning (including after school programs at BASIS).
  
  When I was researching for a great private school in this area, BASIS's Learning Expert Teacher (LET) and Subject Expert Teacher (SET) system caught my eyes. The SET will focus on the academic discipline while LET help student make connection between the disciplines. This is a truly unique experience for my child's education, not to mention an out of the box approach compared to the traditional systems.

  My kids love the school, they learn lots of different topics, not just math and science. They enjoy going to school. When they are happy, i am happy. I have to admit that there are some operational challenges since school is new but they are constantly improving.
