My name is Carolynn Hackett and I am a proud graduate of Virginia Vision Therapy Center. Last summer, I was diagnosed with Eye Movement Disorder, which affects my reading and comprehension skills and Binocular Fusion Disorder, where my eyes point in opposite directions and do not work as a coordinated team. Every week, I looked forward to the next vision therapy session, to the next set of homework, and to the lively conversations, I had with the therapists, doctors, and other patients. Even though the homework was challenging, the activities were also fun and engaging. Joelah and the other vision therapists were extremely helpful in picking activities, games and other fun ways to develop my fine motor, visual, and gross motor skills. When one activity began to get too easy for me, Joelah picked out another activity that built on the skills that I had already developed. As the weeks and months went on, I began to see things in a new light. A few weeks into the first vision therapist session, I began to feel my eyes move up, down, left and right. Excitedly, I told Joelah, “I can feel my eyes move!” Weekly, my family, therapists, and I saw improvement. This helped me to feel more confident in my studies and in everything else that I did daily. For instance, before the vision therapy, I was only able to read about ten to twenty pages per day. Now, that my eyes can track the words on the page more effectively, I average around thirty-to-forty pages per day. Reading a book is also more enjoyable now that I can comprehend the words on the page. As I read, I also do not have to use a bookmark to underline the words on the page. In addition, whenever we go to museums or historical sites now, I do not have to read the words silently in order to comprehend what the signs in the exhibits are saying. Now, I can skim the signs in the exhibits for essential information and understand the points being made by the museum or the historical site. In addition, I can read the steps to a recipe and can usually follow them in a sequential, logical order. Currently, I work at the Michaels in Gainesville as a cashier and sales associate. Before the vision therapy, I do not think I would be as confident as I am now. I am able to find the buttons I need on the cash register without my eyes go bee-bopping all over the place. Tasks like organizing and cleaning can also be done in more efficient manner. All of the hard work that the therapists had me do in the vision therapy sessions is now paying off. I would definitely recommend Virginia Vision Therapy Center to anyone who is looking for a vision therapist. Dr. Davis and Dr. Carlyle both deeply care about their patients and follow up with them every year to check the progress of their patient’s vision. Thank you, Davis Vision Therapy, for helping me to see things in a new light!

Without Virgina Vision Therapy Center, our son would have struggled many years in school. They are without a doubt well-versed in the realm of vision therapy and how the mind and eyes work together. Our family has learned so much and now my son is more balanced, confident, and cognizant of the world around him! Do not hesitate implementing vision therapy into your routine with your child. Your family will benefit from it in the long run.

We are thrilled to have been referred to Dr. Davis and Dr. Carlyle. We finally have found why our very smart girl cried at homework every day. We are absolutely delighted with the staff at the Burke office; they are caring, professional, and very good at understanding developmental vision issues and how they impact the whole child. We cannot recommend them highly enough.
