Thoughtful shabu shabu tasting dinner! Also a very fun and one of a kind experience (especially for a shabu shabu lover). Everything was prepared carefully by the chef. Food was great, however a little bit pricey for the portions. But i believe the quality of the food was up there so i didn’t mind the price as much.
I've been to Shabu Shabu restaurants before... But this was offering a bit more upscale experience. This is an intimate restaurant experience with only 8 seats per session. The menu is set and you're told what will be served although not the exact order.
The staff is pleasant and attentive. Chef Mako is deeply absorbed in her work in preparing and serving the food taking the small breaks between food preparation, cooking, and serving to converse with the guests.
I almost though she started too strong with a piece of A5 Wagyu but I found out that it was a perfect start to her culinary journey. The fat from the wagyu lingers deep into the course of her menu.
The experience is about 2 hours. Shabu Shabu is Japanese style of hot pot cooking usually in a shallow pot with a small amount of fluid.
The menu consists of pork, wagyu, tofu skin, broccoli, chicken meatballs, mochi, Brussels sprouts, tomato, spinach, abalone, and soba noodles. She uses water seasoned with Kombu.
The experience is a lot of fun. I was able to talk to chef Mako after the meal to learn she's from Osaka, Japan, and her experiences leading up to how she devised her menu.
I highly recommend giving her a try if you can find a reservation
Good and fresh food, if not mind blowing/memorable in terms of taste or innovation. Polite but detached service. Overall, a very decent meal for the price but not somewhere im dying to return. Didn’t like that they asked us if we’d take the beef with a raw egg and then charged us for it - it’s an egg! You didn’t have to charge or could’ve told us it would be chargeable!
Good quality meats and beautiful settings. The place let you slow down the pace of New York, enjoy watching the chef cook and finally taste the actual food. Would be nice if there were more introductions. We started with the dippings of what they recommended and later became more adventurous as the dinner went on. Just don’t know if it was appropriate 🤷🏻♀️. Over all, an enjoyable experience and it is definitely on the more expensive side.
This chef is amazing and the meat is so good! The chef cooks everything for you perfectly and pairs with the sauces or lets you pair it yourself. For great quality meat and delicious clean flavors, definitely check this place out.
