Joaquin Miller Park

Address: 3300 Joaquin Miller Rd, Oakland, CA 94602, USA

Park

“One of my fave local parks with a great network of trails for both mountain biking and hiking. Some of the trails are like deep Forrest umbrellaed with tall redwoods. It's hard to believe that this park is so close to a major city.”

“A group of us went backpacking in the middle of Nov. here. The first night in the valley was "a little bit" cold (down to 32 degrees F) and we woke up finding frost on tents and backpacks. The mountain landscapes are very much different than Northern mountains but they are absolutely breathtaking. The highlight was Willett Hot Springs, which I highly recommend. We also saw some shell fossils.”

“Camped one weeknight and our first time there. It's not bad for weeknight; I don't know about weekend. Train came by once in a while, but stop after 1030 or 11PM, and started again at 555AM by my smartphone. Of course the noises from the freeway are constantly there and it's sounded like waterfall. Over all we still have good time there.”

Parsons Landing

Address: Avalon, CA 90704, USA

Campground Park Lodging

“Parsons Landing is a crazy pretty place to camp. There's pretty much nothing here - just fox boxes, clean pit toilets and fire pits. You can pay to have water and firewood delivered to your site which you should do. Previous campers have made wind shelters out of rocks at every campsite for your fire or to pitch your tent behind. If there's an earthquake you're probably gonna suffer a brain injury but what can you do?”

Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park

Address: 33401 Ortega Hwy, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675, USA

Park

“Been camping here since I was three years old. The park rangers are very cool and will only give you a talking to if you deserve one, trust me I know. Not that it should matter for a camp ground, but all the facilities are extremely well managed and very clean. Perfect for a day or weekend trip; or I guess as long as they'll let you stay if that's how you roll.”

San Juan Meadow Group Campground

Live Oak Grove Campground

Address: 33401 Ortega Hwy, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675, USA

Campground Park Lodging

“This is a really fun campground. The site are spread far enough out that there's at least a semblance of privacy, and several are along a slight ridge that gives them a great view of the neighboring hills. The restrooms and water facilities were also very well kept. A perfect spot for a quick one or two-night vacation.”
